MONTGOMERY, Ala. (April 16, 2026) -- The Montgomery County Commission today officially broke ground on the new District 1 Community Center, a transformative investment designed to expand recreational opportunities, strengthen community connections, and provide vital resources for residents across the district.
Located with convenient access from Woodley Road, the new facility will serve as a hub for youth engagement, community programming, and public gatherings, reflecting the County’s continued commitment to enhancing quality of life in every corner of Montgomery County.
The District 1 Community Center is designed with versatility and long-term impact in mind.
Key features the facility is intended to have include:
- A full-size indoor basketball gymnasium designed for recreation, leagues, and community events
- Flexible multi-purpose and meeting spaces to accommodate programs, classes, and gatherings of all sizes
- Dedicated classrooms to support workforce development, youth programming, and educational opportunities
- Modern locker rooms, restrooms, and amenities to comfortably serve residents
- A welcoming lobby and reception area to provide easy access and a central point of entry
- Office and conference space to support daily operations and community engagement
- A nearby storm shelter to enhance safety and resilience for the surrounding community
- Ample on-site parking with safe and convenient access from Woodley Road
“This groundbreaking is a long time coming," said Montgomery County District 1 Commissioner Daniel Harris, Jr. "This facility is the first of its kind for Montgomery County inside the city limits, and we are excited about this project. Once completed, the community center is expected to serve residents of all ages, offering expanded access to recreational activities, educational programs, and community-driven initiatives.
